PRIMARY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD DESIGNS
It was Christmas in June at St. Gerard's Primary School. It was a festive occasion and the students all worked toward designing an image for the Royal Mail Christmas card competition. It was amazing to have the whole primary school participate! All of the entries can be seen on the Royal Mail competition website at the following link:

Thanks to all for their energy and enthusiasm, even though it was six months early! Huge thank you to Mrs. Aron for her organisation.

Year 7 Cultural Visions
For the summer term, Year 7 are considering how other cultures design visual imagery. Through drawing, printmaking and sculpture this unit of work explores how different cultures associate animal imagery and patterns with symbolism. Starting from a drawing 'fish', imagery has been translated in to monoprints (both positive and negative) and completed with the creation of Chinese lantern style objects.
Year 7 Curious Collections
To increase their awareness of drawing, composition and colour the Year 7 students have created works around the theme 'curious collections'. After collecting and documenting images for their curious collections in booklets inspired by the author Keri Smith, the students referenced these objects to design individual compositions. The final stage was to scale-up their work and use oil pastels to achieve bright inspiring drawings.
Year 7 Living Landscape
For their first project this academic year, the Year 7 students have been exploring the imagery and animals found in the landscape to develop work inspired by artists like Angie Lewin and Robert Gillmor. Starting with collage, they then develop drawing, explored the concepts of negative and positive space, before creating their clay tiles. The tiles are carved using printmaking tools to achieve a textures relief surface and then glazed to add colour.
Year 8 Through the Window
As a way of beginning to think about perspective, realism and Surrealism the year 8 students develop images based on windows, doorways and arches. Using shading techniques to develop their 'frames' the student then went on to create surreal environments. Below is a sample of some of their outcomes.
YEAR 8 FORMING NATURE
As their first project for the 2013/14 academic year, the Year 8 students have been exploring the concept of abstraction as it relates to both drawing and sculpture. Students have been influenced by artists like Dilys Jackson (Welsh sculptor) and Peter Randall-Page (British sculptor) as well as inspired by the microscopic photography of Rob Kesseler and Martin Oeggerli. Ultimately they created the small scale sculptures seen below.
Year 9 Tick Tock
For their final project this year, this year group experimented with design ideas by constructing clocks and creating reduction linocut prints inspired by Jasper Johns' 'numbers' paintings. This has helps them to integrate technology and art.
Year 9 Mural Momentus
In this project, students developed their ideas based on imagery that relates to 'this moment' in the year 2014. By collecting imagery and researching events occurring during 2014. Students made individual images that were connected by imagery in the border of each drawing in order to create larger murals. After completing their drawings and working on their shading techniques, they move to acrylic painting. The resulting murals have shown the success students are able to achieve when of working in groups.
YEAR 9 UpCYCLING
This project is focused on recycling and considering how "one person's rubbish is another's treasure". In addition to their main project the students finished the term by creating papercut images inspired by the song lyrics from 'Bonfire Hearts' (James Blunt) and 'Somewhere Only We Know' (by Keane as sung by Lily Allen).
